Medienbotschafter at the Global Media Forum

“Freedom of press and freedom of speech are twins – these two belong inseparably together.” With these words the German foreign minister Guido Westerwelle emphasized the importance of free media. His keynote was one of the highlights at the sixth Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum in Bonn. Under the issue "The Future of Growth – Economic Values and the Media" over 2,500 guests had come together at the World Conference Center Bonn (WCCB).

Our eight Medienbotschafter from China attended the conference to take part in the debates about the future of media. In addition they were curious about the statements of the federal foreign minister who gave a keynote speech on topics such as globalization, values and the media. Concerning the ongoing protests in Turkey Westerwelle said that the demonstrations are a sign “that the civil society is maturing”. Additionally the foreign minister believed that people “shouldn’t be worried when they get in contact with pictures of demonstrations, but should be worried when they realize that there have never been demonstrations in a country.”

Concerning the role of the media Guido Westerwelle pointed out the “technical revolution” that has been taken place in the last decades. In his eyes the speed of news reporting has increased enormously, but it has become harder to explain the world. In a world becoming more complicated and confusing “more nuanced approaches are needed”, said Westerwelle. Besides his statements to global processes in politics, society and media the federal foreign minister also congratulated the Deutsche Welle on its 60th anniversary.
